Maskeliya

This is a video of  Maskeliya , a beautiful area of Sri Lanka. I took this video from my one of my sisters.

Maskeliya , a town in the central hills of Sri Lanka, is known for its natural beauty, lush greenery and cultural significance.

Maskeliya has a rich colonial history, especially related to the tea industry. In the mid 19th century, when Sri Lanka ( the Ceylon) was under British rule, vast  areas in and around Maskeliya were converted into tea plantations. The town became a hub for tea production, helping shape Sri Lanka's global reputation as a top tea exporter. The British developed infrastructure, including roads, railways and estate bungalows many of which still stand today, showcasing the region's colonial legacy. The Tamil community was brought to work on these tea estates and their culture still thrives in the region.

Maskeliya is surrounded by rolling hills covered with tea plantations, dense forests and waterfalls. One of the most iconic landmarks near Maskeliya is Adam's peak ( Sri Pada ) a sacred mountain that attracts thousands of pilgrims every year. The region is dotted with reservoirs , like the Castlereagh Reservoir, which add to the area's scenic beauty.

Maskeliya has a mild climate compared to much of Sri Lanka. The climate in Maskeliya is typically cool and temperate, with misty mornings and occasional rainfall. The area receives heavy rainfall during them monsoon seasons, which helps maintain the lush greenery .Mist frequently blankets the hills, adding to the mystical atmosphere, especially during early mornings. The temperature is usually pleasant, ranging between 15°C to 25°C.

The biodiversity in Maskeliya is vast, with rich tropical ecosystems . The dense forests around the area are home to a variety of plants and animal species. The region is a birdwatcher's paradise, with both migratory and endemic bird species ,such as the Sri Lankan blue magpie and the Layard's parakeet. Animals like sambars ( deer) , wild boars and even the occasional leopards are found in the area's forests.
